Harwich: MP calls for tourist centre to be saved
8:00am Friday 30th July 2010
AN MP has called for a Tourist Information Centre to be saved from closure.
Bernard Jenkin, MP for Harwich and North Essex, has written to Essex County Council, Tendring Council and Harwich Connexions to encourage an alternative be found to the closure of the Harwich TIC, which shut its doors on Friday*30 july*.
He said: “Harwich is a thriving town and a gateway to Europe.
“Tourism plays a vital part in the prosperity of this area and the Tourist Information Centre has held an important role in promoting that prosperity for the past six years.
“It would be a great shame if this centre was forced to close permanently because of funding problems. I hope a compromise can be reached that will secure its future for years to come.”
Bosses of Harwich Connexions, which ran the centre, decided to close it down due to a lack of funding.
Les Double, chair of Connexions, is now looking to donate the building to anyone who can take it away from the site in Iconfield Park, Parkeston.
“It could be sports changing rooms or an office for someone on a piece of land,” he said.
